Title: Using Music to Support Social-Emotional Development (The DIR® Approach)
Screen Shot 2014-02-19 at 1.39.35 AM
Presenter: Melissa St. John
Abstract: Within our society, using behavior therapy is very well know, and in most circles, encouraged. However, there is another form of therapy that is increasing interest within the population of children, in specific, children with autism. This approach is called DIR® or Developmental, Individual-Difference, Relationship Based approach. As a music therapist, I find working within this framework very rewarding. It provides a common language to use across disciplines, organizes how I view the child, provides me an outline in which to assess the child, as well as supports the parent’s ability to be involved and promote the development of their child. Similar to other models of therapy, the DIR® approach is used across all disciplines, from occupational therapy, speech therapy, marriage and family therapy to play therapy and social skills groups. This seminar will provide a basic overview of this framework, and how a music therapist is able to incorporate it within their practice. This presentation will provide an overview of developing a treatment plan as well as working within the specific population of children with special needs, more specifically, autism.
Credentials: Melissa has her Masters in Music, Music Therapy from Colorado State University, MT-BC, completed the Neurologic Music Therapy training and is a certified Intermediate DIR®/Floortime Provider through icdl.com. She has presented on this topic and variations of it internationally as well as across the US.

Here is an evidenced-based pain intervention you can count on!

Presenter: Kathy Jo Gutgsell, intern supervisor at UHCMC.
Date and Time of Presentation: Wednesday, Dec 11 at 6 pm PST
Title: Here is an evidenced-based pain intervention you can count on!

Abstract: Facilitating an effective music therapy intervention for pain management is so much more than playing a pleasing tune on your primary instrument. I will teach in step by step progression how to set up the environment before the first note is played. The environment is more than the patient’s room; it includes preparing the patient and the staff as well. I will furnish a handout with these instructions, as well as the script of the pain intervention. Then I will demonstrate the entire 20-minute intervention. Afterwards, I will discuss with the students how they may adapt the intervention to their preferred instrument and answer any questions they may have. I foresee this as a practical, how-to class that will allow for much give and take.
Credentials: “I facilitated this pain intervention 200 times while conducting a randomized-controlled trial at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. The data demonstrated the statistical significance of the music therapy intervention for lowering pain P<0.0001). The results are published as follows:

Music therapy reduces pain in palliative care patients: a randomized controlled trial. J Pain Symptom Manage. 2013; 45(5):822-31″

Title: Growing Into A New Professional: The Milestones Not Taught In Class

resize
Presenter: Brea Murakami
Date and Time of Presentation: Saturday, November 9th, 10am PST
Abstract: Once a student graduates, many questions remain about the transition into the professional world. “Soft skills” are often neglected by professors who are focused on teaching professional competencies and philosophical orientations. How does an intern build confidence in clinical situations? What are the best tools when searching for a job? Where can new professionals find supervision? This presentation will cover these and other topics that lie outside of the theoretical learning of a classroom. With two years of fresh experience as a professional, the presenter will share her insights on how to navigate one’s development into a thriving music therapy clinician.

The presentation will be divided into four parts that follow different stages of a new professional’s journey: taking advantage of internship, passing board certification, searching for a job, and building clinical presence. Each of these topics will be covered for no more than 15 minutes, ensuring that students of all stages will be engaged. With the agile format, there won’t only the most relevant points will be covered. Personal anecdotes will help to support and create cohesive explanations. After this presentation, students will leave with insights and tools to build their professionalism in music therapy.

Bio: Brea Murakami is a board certified music therapist who currently works with older adults with memory loss and dementia. As a new professional, she has sought out diversity in her experiences working in individual and group settings.
